Garth’s Tips On Nailing Your DIY Video Like a Pro

  1. Natural light is your best friend – but ensure it’s behind the camera not behind you!
  2. Shoot in small 30 – 40 second snippets to make it easier for post-production and minimise the need for you to edit your content
  3. If you are shooting outdoors, make sure it’s nice and quiet, especially if you are filming with a smartphone for audio clarity.
  4. Investing in things such as a good tripod and a Bluetooth mic can take your DIY video to the next level.
  5. Outsource your editing, especially if you are wanting to create graphics and branded content videos.
  6. Practice makes perfect- the more time you spend in front of a camera, the more comfortable you’ll be.
  7. Write what you want to say down, then practice it (start with around 100 words of a script) then redraft it in bullet points and tape it up next to your camera as a prompt.
  8. Have fun! Humorous video content is going viral during coronavirus and the Covid-19 crisis so think about ways you can embrace humour in a respectful but fun way to lighten things up and engage your audience!

Garth’s company We Make Online Videos (WeMOV) is an award-winning video production agency that specialises in delivering high-quality video content that brings the aesthetics and sensibility of cinema to business profile videos, corporate communication videos, television commercials, online advertisements, aerial cinematography, animations and 360 VR videos.
